A year of Islamic State terrorist attacks
Analysis and translation of the Al-Naba News Paper infographic for the year 1445
On 12 July 2024, all channels of the Islamic State terrorist group released the new issue of its weekly al-Naba every Thursday. In this case, in issue 451, the organisation published a detailed infographic showing the harvest and results of terrorist attacks conducted for the Islamic year 1445, i.e. from 19 July 2023 until 6 July 2024.
Thus, the Islamic State (IS) claimed to have conducted 1258 attacks in the year 1445 (19 July 2023 to 6 July 2024) that killed and wounded 5909 military personnel and civilians.
The Islamic State also specifies that 51 people were taken prisoner.
Just to let you know, IS may have slightly inflated the figures provided. However, it has been established over the years that the statistics provided by IS are realistic and fairly accurate, especially those related to the number of attacks conducted.
The Islamic State provides details on the areas where they were conducted, the manner of attack, the targets and the damage caused.
The infographic shows in detail the areas where attacks were conducted, the number of attacks and the casualties caused, as listed below:
Number Attacks (in brackets the number of deaths and injuries caused according to IS):
West Africa [Including Cameroon, Niger]: 433 (1057)
East Asia [Philippines]: 29 (139)
Sahel [Including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger]: 90 (889)
Russia: 1 (500)
Somalia: 18 (187)
Turkey: 1 (2)
Central Africa [DR Congo]: 183 (994)
Mozambique: 97 (241)
Khorasan [Afghanistan]: 41 (635)
Iran: 1 (303)
Iraq: 112 (187)
Sham [Syria]: 210 (649)
Pakistan: 15 (108).
As was already evident from the claims, videos, photo reports and other propaganda material published in the previous months, it was clear that Africa was the area most affected, particularly Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique, where attacks against Christians have increased significantly (one of IS's four military strategies involves precisely attacking Christians, as well as the campaign against Shia carried out in Iran and Afghanistan).
Outside Africa, the area most affected is Syria.
The Islamic State also specifies how it conducted the attacks, claiming the use of ambushes (92) Inghimasi and Itsisshadi attacks (14), direct armed assaults and clashes (612), targeted assassinations (90), use of IEDs (255) and various other operations (177), and parked car bombs (12).
Finally, the infographic shows the type of targets hit to cause the aforementioned military and civilian casualties:
Destruction of vehicles (371), destruction and burning of houses and shops (1565), helicopters and drones (4) Barracks (46) and churches (30).
