Overview
Despite strong counterterrorism pressure from the United States and paramilitary forces of the Southern Transitional Council (STC), supported and trained by the United Arab Emirates, AQAP has maintained a certain resilience.
Counterterrorism operations, infighting, leadership problems, spies, etc., had reduced AQAP's potential and forced it to reduce its areas of operation and continue with guerrilla tactics. Despite all the difficulties, Yemen continued to be plagued by enormous problems that favour the al-Qaeda jihadist group, including political instability, weak state control, endemic corruption, marginalised regions, and growing poverty.
